HELPFUL ~  HELPFUL HINTS
  • In the kitchen, bath and laundry keep often used items at waist to eye level.

  • Laundry area, have someone "build up" your dryer 4" to 6", saves on the bending over.

  • In the bathroom, if you can, have a handicapped commode put in or you could have that built up to a height more accommodating to your heart.  Some use those self installed seats which adds about 6" to a regular commode.  Again, this height is less strain on the heart.

  • Places to keep ER information at home:  on or in your refrigerator (freezer); your medicine cabinet; your glove box in your car; this info should also be kept in your purse or wallet.  EMT people are trained to look in those places. This should include the medicines you are on as well as those you may be allergic to. Include family members, friend or neighbor to be contacted--with phone numbers etc.  Place in a zip lock bag and tag it.  Remember most PH meds lower your blood pressure so have a warning about being given nitroglycerin.  We don't want you to bottom out...

  •   On your cell phone:  program in ICE (In Case of Emergency) program the phone number of person you want notified, if there is more than one person use ICE A and ICE B etc; it's also a good idea to program in HOME and have your home phone number for that one.  Again, EMT people are trained to look for those numbers on cell phones.

  •   Notify your local 911 Center, Emergency Room, the local fire department of your condition and what special treatment you require; especially those on IV medications.  If needed have a special PH nurse come and talk with those folks.  The pharmaceutical companies would be glad to do that.  We decided that a reminder to these places every 6 months (by you or your caregiver) would be advised as they do have a frequent turn-over and some may have been off duty at the time of the first visit.  Stop with this information at different times of the day to cover all shifts.

  •   At the mall or Wal-Mart, have a metal luggage tag made with your emergency information such as your name, phone number of your PH doctor/center, what medicine you are on or if that list is too long, what you have (Pulmonary Hypertension).  You have about 5 lines and it costs only about $5.  If you are on an IV medicine be sure to include "DO NOT DISCONNECT FROM IV".  Buy one of those keychain clips and clip it to your medicine pouch.  A regular luggage tag that you write info on will also work, just something that is close to your body or attached to your medicine pouch.
How to Enjoy Life with a Chronic Illness
There are many things you can do to feel better and enjoy more of life’s simple joys.
Keep a positive attitude.
Your illness doesn’t need to stop you from taking time each day for friends, family, and hobbies. Spending time doing the things you love with people you love will help you feel better.
Quit smoking.
It’s the most important lifestyle change you can make to improve your condition.
Build a relationship with your doctor.
Discussing your symptoms with your doctor can be a key step toward feeling better. He or she can help create a treatment plan that’s right for you.
Learn to relax.
Never rush. Pay attention to how you feel and don’t overdo it. 
Eat well and exercise.
A healthy lifestyle will increase your overall strength and endurance, not to mention improve your mood. Work with your doctor to create an exercise and diet plan that’s right for you.
Keep a journal.
Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be very therapeutic.
Find a hobby.
Take up photography, knitting, or bird-watching.  Learning something new may help you stay positive.
Listen to music.
Country, jazz, or rock ‘n’ roll. Whatever keeps your toes tapping.
Breathe with pursed-lips.
Breathe in normally, but slowly, through your nose, with your mouth closed. Pucker, or “purse,” your lips as if you were going to whistle. Breathe out slowly through your pursed lips.
Stay close to friends and loved ones.
Just feeling connected can give you peace of mind.
Take one day at a time.
Living in the moment can help you keep a perspective on things.
Plan ahead.
Whatever you may be doing, make it easy for YOU.  With housework or other daily tasks, plan so you take one trip instead of “2 or 3”. Bring all the items needed on that first trip.
Something special to think about.
What about a car starter, great for those cold days to get the heat going also works well for those hot and humid days of summer and getting a head start on the AC.

Ok this is the one I got for the ice packs and meds when traveling long distance or overnight etc...
 
It has a plug to go in cigarette lighter in car and a 120 adapter. It’s light to carry and has a handle. The only thing of a drawback is you can not lay it flat it blocks the fan and it won’t work. I have never tried to refreeze an ice pack in it and doubt it would do it. This is like a camper fridge; it will keep things cold or hot but not freeze them.

It is on Amazon for 49.95 plus tax and shipping. I think it is worth it. Just go to Amazon and search for this unit. The unit empty weights about 4 or 5 lbs. 
 
There are several models of the same type available but it would help anyone with meds that need cooled or ice packs. I usually get my med pack and 6 or 8 medium size ice packs in it. Most hotels and stuff will put the old used ice packs in a freezer for you. Should help with those long drives if they come up.

Newspaper weeds away​ When putting in your plants; work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Squirrel Away! To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.Kathy, Maumelle, AR

The home is typically thought of as a safe haven, but it can be a dangerous place for the disabled.  Accidents at home or in the house of a disabled person or of a caregiver are among the leading causes of injury and death.
In the Kitchen      Store often used items at eye or waist level.
Keep potholders and dish towels away from the stove.
Wear short sleeves while cooking.
Keep a fire extinguisher and box of baking soda handy.
In the bathroom    Equip tub with non-skid mat.
Install a long shower curtain to prevent slippery splashes.
Lay down washable, rubber-backed carpeting to soak up spills.
Install handrails around the tub and toilet.
Put in an elevated toilet seat or install handicapped commode.
In the bedroom     Remove or lock bed wheels
Place the night table near the bed.
Keep a magnifying glass nearby to read medication bottles
Label medications distinctly with colored tape or stickers.
Traffic flow  Arrange furnishing for clear pathways and hallways.
Place lamps and appliances near outlets to avoid extension cords.
Tape long cords against the wall.
Floors        Secure rugs to the floor do they have a rubber no-slip backing.
Repair or replace torn carpet.
Equip stairs with a non-skid finish.
Install handrails on both sides of stairs.
Lighting      Light inside and outside well.
Place night lights throughout the house.
Keep flashlights convenient.
Outdoors     Beware of gravel or loose concrete.
Use caution on wet grass.
Spread sand on icy walkways.
Have a teenager/neighbor cut your lawn and do snow removal.
About Bananas

PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! I will add one more here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. Amazing fruit!
 

Cinnamon & Honey Bet the drug companies won't like this one getting around.  Facts on honey and cinnamon:  It is found that a mixture of honey and cinnamon cures most diseases.  Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world.  Scientists of today also accept honey as a "Ram Ban" (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases.   Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases. Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients.  Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, on its issue dated 17 January, 1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists: 
HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast.   It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack.  Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat.  In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins. 
ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily, morning, and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured.  In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain. 
BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it.  It destroys the germs in the bladder.   
TOOTHACHE: Make a paste of one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five teaspoons of honey and apply on the aching tooth.  This may be applied three times a day until the tooth stops aching. 
CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient were found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours.  As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured.  According to information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol. (By the way. if you're taking cholesterol medicine STOP! They all contain STATIN which weaken your muscles...including YOUR HEART and none has been shown to stop heart attacks or strokes!!!!    
COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses. 
UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root. 
GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that if honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas. 
IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts.  Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral diseases.   
INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals. 
INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural Ingredient which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu. 
LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age.  Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of cinnamon powder and three cups of water and boil to make like tea.  Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day.  It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age.  Life spans also increases and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old. 
PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water.  If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root. 
SKIN INFECTIONS: Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections. 
WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water.  If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person.  Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet. 
CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully.  Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month three times a day. 
FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts, are more alert and flexible.  Dr. Milton, who has done  research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water  and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in  the afternoon at about 3:00 p.m. when the vitality of the body starts  to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week. 
BAD BREATH: People of South America, first thing in the morning, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water, so their breath stays fresh throughout the day. 
HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restore hearing. 

Remember when we were kids?  We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!   It's still good for you

What you knew and thought you knew about Peroxide -- that little brown bottle of wonders
Here are some benefits of that plain little ole bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for about a $1.00 at any drug store. What does bleach cost? 

Did you also know bleach was invented in the late 40's? It's chlorine, folks!  And it was used to kill our troops. Peroxide was invented during WWI in the 20's.  It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals. 

Please think about this: 

1.  Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for a few minutes daily, then spit it out. No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes.  Use it instead of mouthwash.  DO NOT SWALLOW
2.  Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs. 

3.  Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell.  Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters. 

4.  After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria. 

5.  Fungus on your feet, spray a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry. 

6.  Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day.  Some doctors have seen gangrene that would not heal with any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide. 

7.  Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will. 

8.  Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold or plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria.  Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue. 

9.  If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day.  The pain will lessen greatly. 

10.  And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through.  You will not have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde. ** It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change. 

11.  Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus, or other skin infections. 

12.  You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them.  If there is blood on the clothing pour it directly on the soiled spot.  Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water.  Repeat if necessary. 

13.  Use peroxide to clean mirrors.  There is no smearing. 

14.  If you have a dog that is flea infested, a bit of peroxide in it’s bath water will kill them immediately.

It is a little brown bottle no home should be without!  With prices of most necessities rising, it’s nice to know there is a way to save tons of money in such a simple, healthy manner!

What a BOUNCE can do 
The US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away.
 
Use them when working outside. It really works. The insects just veer around you.   
1. It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.
 
2. Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.
 
3. It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.
 
4. It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.
 
5. Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen.
 
6. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.
 
7. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors.  Clean with a sheet of Bounce.
 
8. To freshen the air in your home - Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.
 
9. Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.
 
10. Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.
 
11. Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.
 
12. To freshen the air in your car - Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.
 
13. Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan. 
 
14. Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.
 
15. Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the lose hairs.
 
16. Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.
 
17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.
 
18. Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper. 
 
19. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.
 
20. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.
 
21. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.
 
22. Wet a Bounce sheet, hose down your car, and wipe love bugs off easily with the wet Bounce.
 
Vinegar does everything ~ well almost!
Apple cider vinegar is an old folk remedy claimed to be beneficial in treating a long list of ailments. Proponents say that it can cure arthritis, guard against osteoporosis, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, prevent cancer, destroy infection, assist in digestion and weight control, maintain memory, and protect the mind from aging.Vinegar is said to have been used for medical ailments for at least 10,000 years. The Babylonians first converted wine into vinegar in 5000 BCE using date palms, grapes, and figs, and believed vinegar had exceptional healing properties. Hippocrates is said to have used vinegar as an antibiotic. Samurai warriors supposedly used a vinegar tonic for strength and power. During the U.S. Civil War, soldiers used vinegar to prevent gastric upset and as a treatment for various ailments including pneumonia and scurvy. It was used to treat wounds during World War I.
As a drinkStandard Dosage: 2 teaspoons of ACV in 8 oz of water. Add honey to taste.Acute Conditions: 2 tablespoons of ACV in 8 oz of water. No honey.Note: 2 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar may be too much apple cider vinegar for some people. We suggest you start with the standard dosage and see how your body responds to a teaspoon or two of ACV. If all goes well, you can up the dosage over time if you feel a need arise.In summer months: Add 1/4 cup of ACV to a quart of water. Add ice cubes. Drink this on a hot summer day, especially before working out. Your body will feel very cleansed.In winter months: 2 TBLS of ACV in a mug filled with hot water 3x day. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND pH BALANCE It's suggested that Apple Cider Vinegar has such curative abilities because it causes one's pH levels to become more alkaline. If you are going to try apple cider vinegar for allergies, or even to prevent sickness, we suggest you do an investigation of your own by buying a pH test kit at a local pharmacy, garden nursery, or even pool supply store. You can use these kits or pH strips to test your urine to see if you are more alkaline or acid during an allergy attack, virus or bacterial infection. Once you ascertain your pH levels, you can adjust your dosage of Apple Cider Vinegar accordingly. If you live in a highly polluted area like we do (Los Angeles) where allergies and sinus infections are rampant, your system may better balance itself with a small dose of apple cider vinegar each day. Ultimately we suggest you experiment with a kit to find the pH balance your body functions optimally at.The true all-purpose cleaner.
Who knew that vinegar could do so much? It serves a purpose in just about every room of the house, and there are dozens of household (and personal) products that vinegar can replace, as you will see below. It’s cheaper, better for the environment, and better for your health and home (in eliminating unnecessary chemicals).
All Purpose CleanersVinegar in general is a natural (and inexpensive) disinfectant. It can be used on almost anything except marble. So stick it in a spray bottle and get to work! Here are a few more “recipes” for various cleaning purposes: 
All purpose cleaner:2 parts vinegar, 1 part water.
Extra dirty spots:Scour dirty areas with baking soda, then spray the all purpose cleaner (recipe above) over the area and wipe clean.
Floor cleaner:Brew a cup of peppermint tea (use 1 tea bag: one cup for you, one for the floor). Squeeze half a lemon in to the floor mix, and add 1 cup of vinegar. Mop away with your solution; the vinegar disinfects, the tea has antibacterial properties and removes marks, and the lemon freshens & disinfects.
Pee stains on carpet (presumably from pets):Blot up the initial stain, flush it with water, then apply equal parts vinegar and cool water. Blot it all up, rinse, and let dry. This will eliminate odors and stains.
Hard water stains and mineral deposits:Allow a cloth soaked in vinegar to sit on a hard water stain (for example behind your faucet) or mineral deposit for a few hours. Wipe clean.
Appliance cleaning:Clean your coffee maker or laundry machine or dishwasher by running vinegar through it, followed by water. This reduces soap buildup and keeps everything in working order.
In The Kitchen
Remove labels from glass jars:Saturate the labeled area in vinegar and scrape the stickiness right off.
Dirty pot bottoms and cooking utensils:Fill the pot with enough water to cover the stain, add 1 cup of vinegar, and boil rapidly for 5 minutes. Let cool, then scrub the stains off. While you’re at it, put your stainless steel cooking utensils in the pot to get them sparkly clean too.
Fruit stains on hands:Had a little too much fun making that cherry pie or berry salad? Just rub your hands with vinegar to remove the stains.
Coffee stains on china:Use a mixture of salt and vinegar to clean coffee stains from china.
Wooden cutting boards:Wooden cutting boards are great, except they can be a hothouse for bacteria (especially if grooves have been cut into the board with use). Disinfect it regularly with vinegar to keep it (and your food) clean.
Veggie maintenance:Clean and crisp up your veggies by soaking them in a mixture of water and a tablespoon or so of vinegar. Any bugs lingering on your produce will float away, and your soggy celery will come to life again (depending on how far gone it was to begin with).
Smelly onion hands:Eliminate onion odor off your hands by rinsing them in vinegar. This also apparently works with other stinky parts of your body that soap isn’t cutting through, such as underarms.
Clean sticky scissors:Sometimes those scissors get so gummy you can’t even make them work. Just wipe them down with vinegar, and they’ll be like new again.
Laundry
Fabric softener:There are a few fabric softener strategies you can play with:Add equal parts vinegar and baking soda, OR just ½ a cup of vinegar to your wash when you would add fabric softener (final rinse cycle). Line dried towels will come out softer with a vinegar-based softener.
Laundry:You can also add 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar to your wash water, which does the following:Reduces the amount of soap you need to use Reduces lint Brightens colors, and stops them from running Acts as a rinse aid Keeps the washing machine running clean and well
Stain removal:Use vinegar on stains before washing to remove stubborn ones like perspiration, fruit, mustard, and coffee.
In The Garden / Around the House
Kill grass and weeds:Pour or spray full strength vinegar on grass or weeds poking through your driveway or rearing their heads in other unsavory places.
In The CarFrost-free windows:
If you know a chilly night is on the make, you can ensure that your windows will be frost-free when you wake up in the morning. Simply mix 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water, and coat your windows with the mixture the night before.In The Bathroom
Kill soap scum:Wiping a “scummy” area with vinegar and rinsing with water will do as good a job as any at attacking your bathroom shower grime. If the scum is particularly stubborn, scrub with baking soda (a great natural abrasive) after wiping with vinegar. Rinse with water.
Unclog your shower head:Unscrew it, throw it into a pot of equal parts vinegar and water and boil for a few minutes to loosen deposits that are blocking your shower head.
Personal Use
Hair rinse:If vinegar removes soap scum on your tiles, it stands to reason that it will also remove soap scum on your hair. Rinse with a cup filled with ½ a cup of warm water and ½ a cup of vinegar, and your locks will be shiny and free of buildup.
Dandruff treatment:Using the same technique as the hair rinse above but with a higher concentration of vinegar; acts as an effective dandruff treatment.
Acne treatment:Apply equal parts vinegar and water to problem areas.
Facial toner:Using vinegar as toner is a great (and inexpensive) alternative to using alpha hydroxyl based products.
Athletes foot (and other fungus):Apply full-strength vinegar to the affected area twice daily until symptoms abate.Miscellaneous UsesEliminate smoke odor:Simply put a bowl of vinegar in the offending room near the offending source. Smoke odors be gone!
Air freshener:If you would like to reduce icky smells but would like a nicer room smell than vinegar, add some fragrant spices (like cardamom) to your bowl of vinegar and leave it in a warm corner of the room.
Chrome polish:Use full strength vinegar with soft cloth to make that chrome shine.
Insect traps:Vinegar is an active ingredient used in various insect and pest traps.

Providing emergency care to a patient on Flolan®, Veletri or Remodulin®:
»» if there is a problem with the line or pump, You must start an IV in the patient’s arm. When the IV line is in place, screw the pump tubing directly to the IV and make sure the pump is running. Pump tubing should be connected to as little IV tubing as possible.
»» Do not turn off the pump. This action could be fatal.
»» Do not prime the IV line. A bolus of too much medicine is as dangerous as too little and can be fatal.
»» Do not switch pumps, the calibration (infusion rate) is not correct on a “standard” pump. If you have questions or concerns, call the patient’s PH specialist or center before changing the pump.
»» Do not take a blood draw from the IV unless there is a dual lumen and the second lumen is used to draw blood.
»» Note that fever and/or drainage from the catheter in patients on IV therapies may indicate a sudden and serious onset of a line infection.
»» No medications can be infused with Flolan or Remodulin. A second peripheral IV is required if additional medications or intravenous fluids are needed.
»» DO NOT give a large bolus of IV fluids (this may worsen heart failure).
»» Notify the PH specialist of the patient’s problem and condition.
